The animals nearby recognized and understood that this baby was sacred, so they had all agreed to come together to take care of him. Starboy grew quickly, nurtured by thier care. Among the animals, the meadowlark and the magpie were the ones to teach Startboy to speak Lakota, and this is how Starboy came to be.
